Vice President of Development

At the direction of the President & CEO, the Vice President of Development is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive fundraising strategies and plans in support of The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina’s mission and goals. The Vice President of Development creates and leads all elements of philanthropy and fundraising and works closely with the Vice President of Communications and Public Policy in promotional aspects and avenues for the organization. This senior leadership position is directly responsible for achieving all fundraising and financial objectives and managing the overall performance of the entire Development team. This includes, but is not limited to, identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual, corporate, and foundation gifts, including major gifts, planned giving, special events, and direct mail. This position is also responsible for volunteer cultivation and management.
Typical Work Schedule: 8:30am – 5:00pm | Monday – Friday
The Vice President of Development directly manages and leads a team of six (6) individuals at the Director level within Development, Philanthropy Operations, and Volunteer Engagement departments.
Job Responsibilities:
- Strategic Fundraising Leadership: Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies to support the organization’s mission and goals, ensuring alignment with overall organizational strategies.
- Budget Oversight and Data-Driven Decision Making: Develop and manage the Development department’s budget, utilizing data analytics to monitor financial performance, identify trends, and inform strategic decisions, ensuring optimal allocation of resources to achieve fundraising objectives.
- Team Management and Development: Lead and mentor the Development team, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages professional growth and high performance.
- Donor Cultivation, Solicitation, and Stewardship: Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with individual donors, corporate partners, and foundations to secure major gifts and grants.
- Collaboration with Communications: Work closely with the Communications and Public Policy departments for direct marketing efforts and public relations strategies.
- Community Engagement: Actively represent the organization within the community, building and maintaining relationships with a broad range of constituents to enhance the organization’s visibility and impact.
- Mission Alignment and Innovation: Ensure all programs and activities reflect the organization’s values and mission, while fostering a culture of innovation and creativity to anticipate and respond to community needs.
- Volunteer Management: Oversee the cultivation and management of volunteers, ensuring their effective integration into organizational initiatives and collaboration across departments.
- Community-Centric Fundraising: Champion community-centric fundraising within the department and organization.
- Technological Proficiency: Utilize technology effectively, including donor databases and other relevant software, to enhance development efforts.
- Executive Leadership: Be an active and engaged participant of the Executive Management Team. Uphold and display organization values. Serve as a positive role model to staff and across the organization with cross functional colleagues. Demonstrated passion for the mission of the organization.
- Board Engagement: Serve on the Board Development Committee and proactively engage with all board members in building strategic relationships that may benefit the organizations development efforts.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or Communications is required.
- An MPA, MBA or Master of Social Service Administration degree or the equivalent is preferred.
- At least twelve (12) years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising in the non-profit sector, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Fund Raising Leadership: Proven track record leading fundraising initiatives, securing major gifts, capital campaigns, annual fund. Food Bank experience preferred.
- Budget Management: Experience in financial oversight of development budgets, including tracking revenue, managing expenditures, and reporting financial performance.
- Relationship Building: Proven ability to cultivate relationships with key stakeholders, including donors, investors, corporate partners, and community leaders.
- Communication Skills: Exceptional written, verbal, public speaking, and interpersonal abilities.
- Team Leadership: Ability to lead collaboratively with confidence and humility.
- Inclusivity: Possesses relatable lived experiences that connect with diverse staff and stakeholders.
- Board Collaboration: Experience working effectively with nonprofit boards and key stakeholders.
- Analytical Thinking: Employs problem-solving approaches and oversees expenditures to improve resource stewardship.
- Data Proficiency: Skilled in managing and analyzing donor data to enhance fundraising outcomes.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly PowerPoint and Excel, and fundraising software such as Raiser’s Edge.
- Regional Insight: Understanding of North Carolina’s economic challenges and philanthropic landscape, appreciating rural and urban community differences.
- Valid NC Driver’s license as occasional travel in the service area will be required.
- Must believe in the mission of the organization.

Work Environment:
- While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to work in an office setting.

- The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
